AmigaOS 4.0 - About OS4 - Commands

PARTITIONWIZARD Utility
Purpose: To check, repair, salvage and manipulate disk partitions.
Format: PARTITIONWIZARD <logfile> <debugblocks>

This page had to be changed for AmigaOS 4.0 Final and is still a Work in Progress

PARTITION WIZARD is a utility that can be used to manipulate your disks at the File System level.

Using Partition Wizard
When you open PARTITION WIZARD the following window will appear:

When PARTITION WIZARD is invoked, it begins by scanning for all active disk partitions, which it then displays in the left-most panel. Select the partition that you want to run Partition Wizard against.

Once you have selected the partition, the following characteristics for that partition are shown in the right-hand panel:

  • Line 1: Device driver, disk unit number and physical sectors on disk used by the partition
  • Line 2: Number of blocks and the block size
  • Line 3: Filesystem used for the partition and the driver version details
  • Line 4: Volume name defined for the partition
  • Line 5: Status on the partition (Read/Write/not a valid DOS disk etc)
  • Line 6: Total allocation, used, free (all in bytes) and percentage used
 Check 1 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 1 will initiate a check on the partition. Before you do this you may optionally click on the 'Display additional harmless warnings' tickbox (as shown above) to cause a few extra odd messages on occasions.

Pressing the button will open an new window with a progress bar along the top. Any errors and a completion message are reported in the main panel as shown below. Click on the Quit button to return to the main window.

 Repair 2 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 2 will initiate a repair on the partition. Before you do this you may optionally click on the 2 Repair tab to update the panel at the bottom of the window, as shown below:

This panel provides the 'Filesystem' menu to ensure that the correct filesystem is used. The options are:
  • (auto-detect)
  • Original File System (OFS)
  • Fast File System (FFS)
  • International OFS
  • International FFS
  • DirCache OFS
  • Dircache FFS
  • LongName OFS
  • LongName FFS
  • Smart File System (SFS)
Please note that PFS and SFS2 are not supported. The default is auto-detect.

First a progress window as for Check above is displayed, and the next thing you see is a warning message advising that you have started a fix-in-place operation and asks if you are sure you want to continue. If you wish to proceed, click on the Ok button, otherwise click on the Cancel button.

As the repair progresses, various other messages may be displayed. Simply follow the instructions on the screen.

 Salvage 3 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 3 will initiate a salvage on the partition. Before you do this you may optionally click on the 3 Salvage tab to update the panel at the bottom of the window, as shown below:

This panel provides the 'Mode' option where you can select between Deleted/Fast (?) or All/Deep (?) as well as another 'Filesystem' menu to ensure that the correct filesystem is used. The options are:
  • (auto-detect)
  • Original File System (OFS)
  • Fast File System (FFS)
  • International OFS
  • International FFS
  • DirCache OFS
  • Dircache FFS
  • LongName OFS
  • LongName FFS
  • Smart File System (SFS)
Please note that PFS and SFS2 are not supported. The default is auto-detect.

 Undelete 4 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 4 will undelete files on the partition.

 Unformat 5 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 5 will initiate an unformat on the partition.

 Optimize 6 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 6 will initiate a salvage on the partition.

 Find Partitions 7 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 7 will initiate a find partition request. When you select Find Partition, the following window will appear:

Start ..... Quit

 Convert 8 - Pressing this button or Right Amiga + 8 will initiate a convert on the partition.
