AmigaOS 4.0 - About OS4 - Preferences

WBPATTERN Preferences Editor
The WBPattern Preferences editor is used to create background patterns for the Workbench and Workbench windows.

Workbench

The first panel is used to configure the background for the Workbench window, and consists of two logical parts determined by whether Image Type has Picture or Pattern selected.

Picture : has four options:

Picture Name - specifies the name of an image file to be used for the background of the Workbench window. The OS 4.0 default image name is blue9_WWWxHHH.jpg where WWW is width (e.g.800) and HHH is height (e.g.600).

Dither Quality - specifies the dithering quality for the selected image - can be Best, Good or Poor.

Color Quality - specifies the color quality for the selected image - can be Best, Good or Poor.

Layout - specifies the layout type for the selected image - can be Tile, Center, Scale or Scale Well.

The right-hand side of the panel relates to the Pattern option and remains ghosted.

Pattern : consists of several components:

display window showing what the pattern will look like on the screen in a 7 x 7 matrix.

color palette consisting of the first four colors (0-3) and the last four colours (252-255) defined using the Palette Preferences editor.

drawing tools consisting of the standard OS4 drawing tools; freehand gadget, continuous line gadget, outline and filled rectangle gadgets, outline and filled ellipse gadgets, straight line gadget, flood fill gadget, undo and redo gadgets, and the clear gadget.

sample patterns which can be used as a template and recolored or changed as necessary.

The left-hand side of the panel relates to the Picture option and remains ghosted.

Windows

The second panel is used to configure the background for all other windows, and is similar to the Workbench window described above, i.e. it consists of two logical parts determined by whether Image Type has Picture or Pattern selected.

Picture : shows the same four options, but with two sigificant difference:

Picture Name - specifies the name of an image file to be used for the background of all other Windows, such as drawers. The OS 4.0 default image name is smallerw.png.

Layout - is ghosted out and cannot be used.

Pattern : consists of of the same components and is used exactly the same.

Screen

The third panel is used to configure the background for the screen behind the Workbench window, and is similar to the Workbench window described above, i.e. it consists of two logical parts determined by whether Image Type has Picture or Pattern selected.

Picture : shows the same four options, but with two sigificant difference:

Picture Name - specifies the name of an image file to be used for the background for the screen behind the Workbench window. The OS 4.0 default is for a patttern rather than an image.

Layout - is ghosted out and cannot be used.

Pattern : consists of of the same components and is used exactly the same. The default pattern is a plain white screen.

Action Buttons

When you make changes you can choose to 'Save' them permanently, just 'Use' them temporarily until the system is rebooted, 'Test' them to help you decide whether you have achieved what you expected, or you can 'Cancel' and lose all changes.
