The WBPattern Preferences editor is used to create background patterns for the Workbench and Workbench windows.
Workbench The first panel is used to configure the background for the Workbench window, and consists of two logical parts determined by whether Image Type has Picture or Pattern selected.
Picture Name - specifies the name of an image file to be used for the background of the Workbench window. The OS 4.0 default image name is blue9_WWWxHHH.jpg where WWW is width (e.g.800) and HHH is height (e.g.600). Dither Quality - specifies the dithering quality for the selected image - can be Best, Good or Poor. Color Quality - specifies the color quality for the selected image - can be Best, Good or Poor. Layout - specifies the layout type for the selected image - can be Tile, Center, Scale or Scale Well. The right-hand side of the panel relates to the Pattern option and remains ghosted.

Picture : shows the same four options, but with two sigificant difference: Picture Name - specifies the name of an image file to be used for the background of all other Windows, such as drawers. The OS 4.0 default image name is smallerw.png. Layout - is ghosted out and cannot be used. Pattern : consists of of the same components and is used exactly the same.
The third panel is used to configure the background for the screen behind the Workbench window, and is similar to the Workbench window described above, i.e. it consists of two logical parts determined by whether Image Type has Picture or Pattern selected. Picture : shows the same four options, but with two sigificant difference: Picture Name - specifies the name of an image file to be used for the background for the screen behind the Workbench window. The OS 4.0 default is for a patttern rather than an image. Layout - is ghosted out and cannot be used. Pattern : consists of of the same components and is used exactly the same. The default pattern is a plain white screen. Action Buttons When you make changes you can choose to 'Save' them permanently, just 'Use' them temporarily until the system is rebooted, 'Test' them to help you decide whether you have achieved what you expected, or you can 'Cancel' and lose all changes.
